‘Van Helsing’ Post-Apocalyptic Vampire TV Series Coming to Syfy
There is a new vampire hunter in town, and that person comes in the form of "Van Helsing," or rather Vanessa Helsing. Although there has already been a movie made about the character and his lineage, which was essentially a spinoff from "Dracula," this new show will be a series on Syfy, and there are a few things about it that will set itself apart from the Dracula mythology.
According to Deadline, the series will be centered on the daughter of the infamous vampire hunter Van Helsing, who famously trekked through the Carpathian mountains in Romania to race against the sunset in order kill Dracula before he could reach his home castle and become strong again.
Since this is a series and a reimagining, it will feature Vanessa Helsing as a transplant into the future. Five years from modern times, this 19th century vampire hunter will be resurrected into a post-apocalyptic world overrun by vampires. Much in the same theme as "The Walking Dead" over on AMC, the characters of this series will have to face all odds just to survive against imperialistic monsters. The only real difference here is they will be fighting vampires, not zombies.
Vanessa will have a unique power against the vampires that will in some way give the remaining human elements a last hope for survival.
Co-chairman of Calgary-based Nomadic Pictures Chad Oakes spoke about the new project, which will be getting an international release.
"'Van Helsing' represents a new mythology in sci-fi by challenging traditional vampire rules," Oakes said. "The series is unique in exploring a world completely dominated by vampires, while the human characters have to learn the importance of working together to ensure their survival."
Production on the series will start in January 2016, and the first season will be 13 episodes. It is expected to premiere on the cable network in the fall 2016.
