"The X-Files" reboot series, which is coming to Fox early next year, has been contracted for a limited series run, leading some to believe that new characters on the show could bring back the series for a full spin off.

According to TV Line, the show has all the key factors necessary to launch a spin off or a continuation series. In some sort of "pass the torch" move, Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) could come back for the limited run in order to send the series over to a new generation of fans: millenials, of course.

Although series creator Chris Carter has already told TVLine that the series was brought back with only the one single contract, that does not mean that he ruled out the potential of a spin off or continuation with the new, younger agents on the block, played by "The Flash's" Robbie Amell and "Six Feet Under's" Lauren Ambrose. The younger duo are primed for a new series, which could potentially garner interest from the millennial generation.

In the original series, Duchovny and Anderson were actually both replaced, although only in minor ways, by Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish, who portrayed agents John Doggett and Monica Reyes, respectively. But these other characters were more of a filler for the show. Mulder and Scully never really went away. They just fell back out of the main action at some points.

Carter said that people are free to speculate, but the series contracts do not specify anything more than the limited events, scheduled to start on Jan. 25 next year, right after the NFC Championship game on Fox.

Still, more importantly for hopeful fans, Carter did not rule out the potential spin off with those two characters either, which leaves a slim possibility open that the popular series will rise again.
