WWE Title Tournament Bracket: Eight Superstars Remain Battling for Coveted Title
The WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament is down to the final eight superstars after the conclusion of the WWE SmackDown tapings at Manchester, England, per Wrestle Zone. Alberto Del Rio, Kalisto and Neville all advanced to the quarterfinals that will be held next week on Monday Night Raw.
The trio joined Dean Ambrose, Cesaro, Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns and Dolph Ziggler, who won their bracket matches at this week's episode of Raw. The new WWE World Champion will be crowned at Survivor Series on Nov. 22 after Seth Rollins vacated the title due to a serious knee injury that will keep him out for six to nine months.
Del Rio defeated Stardust to advance in the next round. He will face Kalisto, who shocked everyone by beating Ryback clean. According to Bleacher Report, WWE is looking for an additional Hispanic star, and Kalisto may be given that opportunity, especially if he can keep up with the former world champion and current U.S. champion Alberto Del Rio.
Neville used his finisher Red Arrow to defeat King Barrett and will face Intercontinental champion Kevin Owens in the quarterfinals. Owens pinned Titus O'Neil after a pop-up powerbomb, per WWE.com.
Roman Reigns was able to overcome the challenge of The Big Show when he used a Superman Punch followed by a Spear for the win. Reigns will face Cesaro in the next round after the Swiss superstar defeated Sheamus in their Round of 16 matchup.
"The Celtic Warrior" got distracted after Manchester United star forward Wayne Rooney slapped King Barrett outside. Sheamus still has a chance to win the WWE championship because of his Money in the Bank briefcase.
Dean Ambrose was victorious in his match against main roster newcomer Tyler Breeze. "Prince Pretty" was impressive in his Raw debut, but Ambrose outsmarted him with an inside cradle for the win. "The Lunatic Fringe" will face Dolph Ziggler in the quarterfinals after he defeated The Miz. Ziggler used a well-timed superkick to beat the former WWE champion.
Reigns is the favorite to win the tournament because he was scheduled to defeat Rollins a Survivor Series, per Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling News Observer via Wrestling Inc. However, in a separate report by Meltzer via Cage Side Seats, WWE is worried about the unbalanced number of faces compared to heels in the main roster.
The company is not 100 percent locked in for Roman Reigns as champion because they feel that a strong heel is needed to have a good feud with Roman. Give Me Sport suggested the Reigns and Ambrose will likely meet in the finals with a possibility of a heel turn for either superstar. You can view the updated bracket by clicking here.
