Costa Rica and Panama face off on Tuesday with both teams looking to take sole possession of first place in Group B of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers.
Both sides current sit atop the group with three points apiece. Panama, which will play the host on Tuesday, won its opener 2-0 in Jamaica, giving it a huge boost over one of the top contenders of the group. Entering the tournament, many wondered whether Panama, which was close to qualifying for the 2014 playoffs, was going to be able to get through a relatively tough group that included Costa Rica and Jamaica. The first game has gone a long way toward proving any doubters wrong.
As for Costa Rica, the team will look to overcome a forgetful summer that included a poor showing at the Copa America and a quarterfinals exit in the Gold Cup against Mexico. Costa Rica pulled off got a solid 1-0 win over Haiti in its opener, though few are completely in love with the team's performance over the group's weakest opponent. That was the opportunity for Costa Rica to make a big statement.
However, there are some excuses. The team was without Celso Borges who was injured during the game against Haiti. The team is also missing forward Johan Venegas and center-back Oscar Duarte. Goaltender Keylor Navas will also be missing from the match as he continues to recover from an injury.
Costa Rica holds a healthy advantage in head-to-head matches against Panama winning 27, losing 10 and drawing 10. In World Cup Qualifiers, Costa Rica has a record of seven wins, two losses and three draws. During the 2014 Qualifiers, the teams met in the hexagonal stage and Costa Rica came away with a win and a draw; Panama conceded two goals in each game losing 2-0 and tying 2-2.
Prediction: Costa Rica comes away with a 1-0 win.
