Her upbeat hit songs "Hips Don't Lie" and "Whenever, Wherever" have made Shakira a consistent chart topper in the music world. A versatile singer, songwriter and instrumentalist, Shakira was a well-known star in Columbia, her native country, before she entered the U.S. music scene in 2001. Her songs are warm, rich and intimate. However, her latest albums did not measure up to the charm, glow and magnetism of her works from 10 years ago. Her new album, Shakira, does not have the Grammy sparkle nor does it have the chance of getting a nomination from the Golden Globe awards.

The new album is Shakira's 10th, where she played a role in writing and producing the album, something which was not a wise choice, unfortunately. The album starts out sounding like J-Lo's song "Dare (La La La)" with Max Martin, Dr. Luke, and others at the helm.

The song "Can't Remember to Forget You," a duet with Rihanna, is unlikely to have much staying power. Even though both stars are involved in it, the song lacks the liveliness of a Shakira hit and it seems that harmony is missing in the collaboration. The two stars are managed by Roc Nation management, and the video seems like it just stuck the two stars together and hoped their appeal could carry the track.

The song "Cut Me Deep" did stand out, however; it features Nasri Atweh. Passion, emotion and power are somehow missing in the lyrics of the songs in the new album. Although the new album has some brilliant spots, it is still below par compared to her earlier songs like her "She Wolf" in 2009 and "Sale el Sol" in 2010.

Shakira was also criticized on social media for including the song "Boig Per Tú" (Crazy for You) sung in Catalan, a southern Spanish region where she resides. The song is a favorite of Gerard Piqué, her FC Barcelona soccer-player boyfriend. Shakira and Gerard have lived in Barcelona since 2010 with their son, Milan.
