Juan Manuel Marquez Next Fight: 'Dinamita' to Promote Final Match in 2016 on His Own?
Mexican boxing great Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez talked about his next fight and revealed his desire to be the one to promote his own bout in 2016. This anticipated battle next year may be his final match in his career.
The highly esteemed "Dinamita" told ESPN Deportes that his goals for this venture before he steps away from his much-loved sport, Boxing Scene noted.
"I have to see what suits us and what can be done, but to close my career as my own promoter would be awesome," the 42-year-old boxer said.
However, the seasoned warrior, who is now a free agent, is still not sure if he can even stage a comeback. Yet, if ever it happens, he has only one special venue in his mind to hold this momentous occasion.
"We still do not know if I will continue. I am a free agent, let's see what comes. I think the important thing is that if I continue -- I would like to do the last fight right here in Mexico City," Marquez shared.
Marquez's previous plan
In June, "Dinamita" revealed his intention of coming back this fall, World Boxing News noted. Although he was still recovering from a kneecap injury, he was very eager to accomplish that goal by focusing on rehabilitating his injured body part.
"For me, hunger for success is the most telling factor...So firstly I need to recover, second find a rival and then war! If everything goes well, I'm planning to fight again in October or November," Marquez said that time.
According to his conditioning coach Angel "Memo" Heredia, the four-time division world champion wanted to grace the stage for two more fights before he hung up his gloves, a separate report from Boxing Scene noted.
Yet, Marquez's earlier plan did not push through. The veteran fighter announced in October, per another article on Boxing Scene, that he decided to forego his goal of a fight this year. He reasoned that with only less than two months away before 2015 ends, he would not be able to prepare well for a fight. "Dinamita" shared that that he is someone who "likes to train for three or four months to prepare for a fight."
Marquez last appeared in a showdown against Mike Alvarado in May 2014 at the Forum in Inglewood, where he emerged triumphant via a unanimous decision, per BoxRec.
Will "Dinamita" be able to realize his dream of promoting his farewell fight in Mexico?
