In a candid interview, Zayn Malik talks about his past relationship with Perrie Edwards, where he expressed his undying love for the Little Mix singer. The former One Direction member also shared his plans in terms of his musical career and revealed his interest to collaborate with Liam Payne on a new song.

Speaking for the first time about his split with Edwards, Malik told Fader magazine that he never meant to break up with her after four years of being together. The 21-year-old also denied reports that he had broken off their engagement through text.

"I have more respect for Perrie than to end anything over text message. I love her a lot, and I always will, and I would never end our relationship over four years like that," he said.

Malik added that his ex-girlfriend already knows that he's not the type to break up with someone over text and believes that the "public should know that as well." However, he declined to go into details about his breakup with the singer.

In the same interview with Fader magazine, Malik also talked about his previous life with the popular boy band One Direction. His exit from the band was very much publicized and various rumors were spread about his supposed reasons for leaving the group. However, Malik told the publication the truth that he left One Direction because he felt his musical skills were not creatively harnessed.

"There was never any room for me to experiment creatively in the band. If I would sing a hook or a verse slightly R&B, or slightly myself, it would always be recorded 50 times until there was a straight version that was pop," he revealed to Fader.

In a sense, regardless of the boys having the skills to sing another musical genre, One Direction had to stick with the "general conception that the management already had of what they want for the band." Malik said this made making music for him weird and made him unhappy. So he quit.

In his interview with Fader, he also revealed that he's talked to Liam Payne a couple of weeks back and they talked about a possible collaboration. Malik said Payne also confided in him about finally understanding why he had to quit One Direction.

Meanwhile, Edwards had also since spoken up about her breakup with Malik in previous interviews. She had told MailOnline's You Magazine that she had a "hard time" coping with the split, but thanked her fellow Little Mix singers for being there for her through the heartbreak.
