Barcelona is in first place in La Liga at the moment, but fans of the defending champions may be in for some more good news.

According to ESPNFC, Lionel Messi has returned to full practice for the first time since suffering a torn ligament in September. Messi is widely regarded as the single best player in the world today, and getting the Argentine superstar back would be a huge boost.

Many soccer experts believe this weekend will be return game for Messi, however one of his teammates isn't so confident. Luis Suarez believes there could be a big risk if Messi returns early, and he's not so sure if Messi can return against Real Madrid. "Messi is a player that makes a difference in all games and in clásicos he has always made a big impact but we will have to see if he is ready," said Suarez.

What a return it would be. Barcelona and Real Madrid have given fans possibly the greatest rivalry in soccer history. Last season these two squads split the season series 1-1 with the home team winning both games. Real Madrid, who will be at home this weekend, won last year at home, 3-1. Cristiano Ronaldo scored via penalty kick in that game. Barcelona got revenge at home at the Camp Nou, and went on to win the league title for the 23rd time in franchise history.

Even without Messi, Barcelona has performed very well this season. They are currently in first place with a 9-0-2 record, three points ahead of Real Madrid. Neymar and Suarez have been playing outstanding this year in Messi's absence. Neymar leads the league in goals scored with 11 goals while Suarez ranks second with nine of his own. Obviously Barcelona is not better without Messi, but there's no huge urgent need for him to return this weekend.

Real Madrid, who is coming off a loss to Sevilla, needs this game far more than Barcelona does. Real Madrid is three points behind their rivals, and Atletico Madrid is just one point behind them. If Real Madrid lose this game they could be tied for third place with Celta Vigo.

Barcelona and Real Madrid face off on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 12:15 p.m. EST in Madrid.
