Despite a trend in recent years of stores opening early for Black Friday, some stores have refused to open on Thanksgiving, with some few even set to remain closed on Friday as well.

According to The Black Friday.com, several stores will not open early for the Black Friday sale, meaning they will remain closed on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26.

Warehouse superstores like Costco, BJ's and Sam's Club are staying closed on Thanksgiving, waiting until Friday to begin their Black Friday deals. Costco will open at 9:00 a.m. Friday and stay open until 8:30 p.m. This is only one hour earlier than the store's normal weekday opening time of 10:00 a.m. and the regular closing time. BJ's will open at 7 a.m. on Friday and close at their normal weekday closing time. Sam's Club will retain its normal weekday hours of 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Black Friday.

Gamestop will not be open on Thanksgiving Day, but they will open at 5 a.m. Friday, meaning gamers will have to wait until Friday to get their discounted video games and console bundles.

Other stores will remain closed on Thanksgiving Day, including:

  • Cabelas
  • A.C. Moore
  • Babies R Us
  • Half Price Books
  • Harbor Freight
  • Jo-Ann Fabrics
  • Menards
  • Nordstrom
  • P.C. Richard and Son
  • Pier 1 Imports
  • Petco
  • Raymour & Flanigan
  • Staples
  • T.J. Maxx

  • True Value

Outdoor retailer REI will close on Thanksgiving and on Black Friday, according to Time Money. REI might be missing out on a big sales day, but they are sticking to their choice of "opting outside." The store has even created an OptOutside website with the hashtag #optOutside to encourage shoppers to enjoy the outdoors on Black Friday instead of shopping.

Instead of offering door-buster deals on clothing and outdoor accessories, REI would rather its members get outside and enjoy the holiday. REI will pay its employees to "be outside." In a message to customers, the store said, "While the rest of the world is fighting it out in the aisles, we hope to see you in the great outdoors."
