Samsung, one of the biggest smartphone producers in the world, is fusing old-school style and modern technology in one handset in development. Flip phones ruled for a time and their comeback may be in the works as it was recently revealed that Samsung is planning on releasing a new one soon.

According to a report from Pocket-Lint, TENAA certified a Samsung clamshell phone dubbed the SM-W2016. The flip phone style can sometimes seem outdated in the streets, but Samsung is doing its best to give their new handset a sleeker look with a curved glass front and metal frame, a flip version of the Galaxy S6 Edge. The smartphone will be equipped with two 3.9-inch Super AMOLED displays with 1280 x 768 resolution.

Under the hood, consumers can expect the Samsung SM-W2016 to be powered by a new 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420 processor as well as 3GB of RAM and 64GB storage. A T9 predictive keypad will also be part of the package. Rounding up the features are a 16MP main camera plus a five-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calls. The Samsung clamshell will run with Android 5.1.1.

For those who mourned the exit of flip phones in the modern market, this new Samsung handset is a welcome innovation. Not only is it produced by one of the top leaders in the industry, but it's also packed with high-end features that do not often land in flip phones.

While the Samsung SM-W2016 is a more premium device, there are other flip phones that have debuted recently, so the trend may be making a true re-emergence.

The Samsung Galaxy Folder is one, a clamshell that dropped earlier this year carrying a quad-core processor, according to a listing from GSM Arena. The Android 5.1 device also packed 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot that allows up to 128GB of additional storage. Other features include a TFT capacitive touchscreen with a 480 x 800 resolution (246 ppi), eight-megapixel main camera and a two-megapixel secondary snapper.

Last year, LG also entered the flip phone market with LG Wine Smart, according to a report from Pocket-Lint. While appealing to the older market with the design, the Wine Smart also gears up its user for good content as it runs on the Android 4.4 -- the latest version at the time of its release. Other specs include a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 3.5-inch LCD display, 4GB of internal storage, microSD slot for up to 32GB of expandable memory, and an eight-megapixel main camera backed by a front-facing VGA.

Neither Galaxy Folder nor Wine Smart was released globally, so here's hoping the more premium Samsung clamshell phones will be available outside of Asia.
