Universal may have had one of the best years at the box office due to its record breaking films, but it also showed strength when it came to marketing the music of the films.

Among the films which broke music soundtrack records was "Fifty Shades of Grey." According to Variety, the February release saw two of its singles in the top 10.

The songs, which were part of a soundtrack that was released by Republic Records, were "Earned it" by the Weekend and Ellie Goulding's "Love Me Like You Do." Of course part of the success of these two singles was due to the popularity of the artists involved.

However, that was not the case with Beyonce's "Crazy in Love." That song, which was presented in a slowed down version, was promoted alongside the trailer and the song really took off. Universal also made sure to release the former two songs before the release of the movie and that helped to jumpstart both the film's anticipation but also the singles.

Other films the company has had success with this year included "Furious 7" with the hit "See You Again," by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth. That song topped the singles charts for 12 weeks.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" also broke records at the box office as it opened to $85 million in February and went on to gross $166 million domestically. The movie also grossed over $404 million internationally.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" was the start of a trilogy that will continue in 2017. The sequel, "Fifty Shades Darker" is currently in pre-production with James Foley directing and Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson reprising their lead roles. The film will also be shot alongside the third installment "Fifty Shades Freed."

Universal has not announced any updates on songwriters for the next film but as production begins more details will be revealed.
