Author, Marine Phil Klay Supports American Acceptance of Syrian Refugees on Social Media
U.S. Marine Phil Klay, author of the National Book Award winner "Redeployment," took to social media to condemn efforts by Congress to heighten security on Syrian refugees.
In light of the recent terror attacks in Paris, a political debate has raged in the U.S. concerning the country's handling of Syrian refugees. However, the U.S. officer is openly calling for America to stay true to its ideals.
Klay wrote a series of posts on Twitter, censuring Congress and other political figures for trying to significantly heighten security measures monitoring Syrian refugees attempting to enter the country.

On Thursday, the House of Representatives voted heavily in favor of a bill that would require refugees be certified by the secretary of homeland security, the FBI director and the director of national entry, before being allowed entry to the Untied States.
The Obama administration opposes the bill. The president intends to veto it if the bill passes the Senate, which The Guardian reports is unlikely. However, in the event it does pass both chambers of Congress, a presidential veto could potentially be overridden.
Other right-wing politicians such as Donald Trump have suggested extreme measures, such as registering U.S. Muslims in a security database and deporting 2,000 Syrian refugees already allowed into the country under the Obama administration.
Klay said that, as a U.S. marine who took an oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States," he was obligated to risk his life, not only for the physical safety of Americans, but for American ideals as well.
Klay also said it was not debate between right and left, recalling President Ronald Reagan's farewell speech.

He ended his comments by saying that America needed to follow Germany's example and "be the kind of nation that others will follow."
16. But it's only during frightening times when you get to find out if your country really deserves to call itself the 'home of the brave.'

France is likewise determined to stay true to its morals. French President François Hollande promised Wednesday to hold true to France's promise to welcome 30,000 refugees over the next two years.
"We have to reinforce our borders while remaining true to our values," he said.
Klay also took the opportunity to praise the work the International Rescue Committee (IRC).
