'Once Upon a Time in Wonderland' 2014: ABC Cancels Spin-Off Before Season 2, But Can Characters Be Saved?
In a move that proves that spin-offs are not always successful, ABC is cancelling the series developed from its popular show Once Upon a Time. After not living up to expectations, ABC subtly announced the end of the show when it changed the season finale to a series finale. But, what will happen to the cast and the story line?
The show was based off Lewis Carrol's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but with a twist that set the story in the same universe as Once Upon a Time. With allusions to Disney and ABC's Lost, Wonderland brought a different tone to the widely known storyline. With occasional crossover episodes, the show aimed to bring the same audience as Once Upon a Time, but it was not meant to be.
ABC announced the show's cancellation on Friday, according to USA Today. Originally designed as a "bridge" in between seasons of Once Upon a Time, the new show was instead launched into the Thursday night slot where it has struggled ever since. With an average viewership of 3.3 million, the show has not seen the success of its mother show, which is believed to be renewed for a new season though it has not been officially announced.
However, there could be some possibilities with what remains of the show.
According to Entertainment Online, executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis did not dismiss the possibility of merging the two shows, though there are no definite plans currently.
"[Wonderland and OUAT] are slightly out of sync," Horowitz said at a press conference before the show's cancellation. "I would say that we love the characters in [Wonderland] obviously, and would certainly be open to it down the line ... Next year, perhaps."
There will not be another year for Wonderland, but fans hope something can be done to salvage the characters or part of the story and include them into the original Once Upon a Time.
