Shawn Mendes Says He's 'Made a Move' on Camila Cabello, Set Dating Rumors Straight
On Nov. 23, Shawn Mendes and Fifth Harmony's Camila Cabello made a guest appearance on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" and discussed their rumored romance.
The two teenage pop singers were on hand to discuss and perform their new duet, "I Know What You Did Last Summer." However, once sitting down with Corden, the television host grilled them about rumors that they are dating.
When asked if they were an item, the two singers denied it, but this led Corden to reply with, "Can I be honest? I don't believe you. There's no way you haven't made out."
Mendes was first to reply and chose to make light out of the awkward subject by joking he's made a move on Cabello before.
"We ... We haven't, actually. Every time I try to make a move, she just swears me off," he said. "It's never gonna happen."
Cabello said it was Mendes' fault they aren't dating because he "friend-zones" her and calls her a kid.
Corden then teased saying he believes they were both defensive and "already love each other" but are scared to commit. Despite the jokes, Cabello made sure to end the bit by officially denying the rumors.
In an interview with Rolling Stones, the popstars discussed their friendship and the familiar name behind their duet.
The 18-year-old explained that she and Mendes first met on Austin Mahone's 2014 tour but didn't spend much time talking because Mendes was distant.
"He was just playing with a guitar, and I was like, 'Hi! Nice to meet you.' We didn't really hang around much during Austin's tour," said Cabello. "It was Shawn's first tour ever, so he was constantly working, and if he wasn't working, he was in his bus playing guitar and being a loner."
The two reconnected at Taylor Swift's 1989 World tour, where Mendes was an opening act and Cabello a guest. It was backstage that the two reconnected and became friends.
They also discussed the fact that their song has the same name as the 1997 slasher film starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer's" Sarah Michelle Gellar.
"When we were writing, I remember one of us just kind of blurted out the phrase 'I know what you did last summer,'" Cabello said. "I remember while we were recording, we knew that it was a movie title because one of our friends showed us the trailer for it. ...We were like, 'OK, no. This is a completely different thing!'"
