Saul Alvarez Next Fight: 'Canelo' Won't Accept Bout Above 155 Pounds, Says Eddie Reynoso
The new World Boxing Council middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will not accept any bout above 155 pounds.
"Canelo's" trainer Eddie Reynoso told Boxing Scene that his fighter will only fight at his chosen weight of 155 pounds. Their camp is also imposing the same condition on the WBC mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin.
"We are ready to fight anyone at 155 pounds. We are very comfortable at this weight. If he wants to come to this weight we will fight anybody," Reynoso said.
Even before "Canelo" triumphed over Miguel Cotto on Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, he already declared his position on this matter.
The 25-year-old Mexican tells Fight Hype that Golovkin can only get a go signal for a showdown if he agrees to clash at 155 pounds.
"If he wants to fight with me, let him come down to 155 and I'll fight him whatever day he wants," Alvarez said.
"At this moment, my body isn't ready for 160 pounds. Maybe 1 or 2 more years I'll be ready for 160," the young Mexican said.
It seems that the tension between these two parties will further escalate regarding this argued catch-weight term for the 160-pound or middleweight division. International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization middleweight king is firm on not willing to face the Cotto-Canelo winner at a weight below 160 pounds, per a Boxing Scene report.
"Triple G's" trainer Abel Sanchez reacted against Team "Canelo," maintaining that Alvarez should face him at 160 pounds, a separate Boxing Scene report noted.
"Gennady is the interim-champion and they have to fight him. If they don't fight him, they vacate and Gennady becomes the champion. For this particular fight, for the WBC belt, I believe the Golovkin's team is thinking that there is no reason for it be any less than 160," Sanchez said.
The boxing coach suggested that his boxer and "Canelo" may face again in the future and may agree to whatever weight limit. However, for Alvarez' first defense, "it has to be at 160" pounds.
Marquez urges Alvarez to face Golovkin
Juan Manuel Marquez encourages Alvarez to fight "Triple G" immediately, Fight Hype reported. "Dinamita" shares that Oscar De La Hoya, "Canelo's" promoter, still wants to let the two face after two years. Marquez comments that it will not be just for the unbeaten Kazakh warrior to wait that long, especially because he is the WBC mandatory challenger.
Can "Canelo" and Golovkin work a solution to make a Canelo-Golovkin match a reality?
