‘Sense8’ Update: Cinematographer John Toll Talks Working With Wachowskis, Says Shooting Begins in March
"Sense8" is one of the most ambitious series to hit the small screen. Shot all over the world with a whirlwind of colorful characters all in each others' heads, it's a captivating project for both the audience and the team behind the Netflix show. Cinematographer John Toll takes the time to discuss with The Film Stage working in the "Sense8" set, touching on the large scale production involved to stage this small screen venture.
Toll is no stranger to the big leagues with projects like "Braveheart" and "Almost Famous" under his belt, but even for him, shooting in eight different countries for a television-type setting was a new environment. There were different teams with varying directors, but the cinematographer revealed there wasn't an official "house style" set by the Wachowskis.
"We sort of developed a working style based on necessity as much as anything else, because we had a hell of a lot of work to do," Toll explained. "The amount of work on a daily basis was much more work per day than any of us had been used to, because there was a television schedule and we're doing twelve hours of television -- probably the same length of time that we've taken to do two-hour movies."
He continued, "Lana and Andy were traveling, even though we were all in production simultaneously at one point. As producers, they would travel to the other locations where the other directors were shooting, and they basically just had collaborations. Stylistically, what we had established had sort of bled into the other units. But it wasn't a... we never all had the opportunity to sit in a room together and say, 'Okay, here's what we're going to do. Here's the style of the piece.' It just sort of emerged in a very practical sense, in that... we started shooting. This is what we did, and it made sense for everyone else."
The result was one that slowly but surely gained a loyal following and the Netflix series was renewed for a second season to the relief of the fans. Toll will still likely be a part of it and said the team is currently finalizing schedules and crew.
"They're talking about March," he revealed when asked about the shooting dates for the next season.
The "Sense8" cast and crew have been tight-lipped about the future of the show, but fans have no need to worry as the Wachowskis' brainchild has an existing five-year plan.
"We have a rough structure for five years," producer J. Michael Straczynski told Collider last May. "Should Netflix decide to do it, we already have the second season worked out in great detail. And then, we have rough notes for the next three years, beyond that."
