Ronda Rousey Next Fight: 'Rowdy' Should Change Her Game To Bounce Back, Says Rafael Cordeiro
Ronda "Rowdy" Rousey took a humbling knockout loss to Holly Holm during their women's bantamweight title fight at UFC 193. The former world champion is expected to bounce back from the setback, but MMA coach Rafael Cordeiro believes Rousey should make changes in her fighting style.
Cordeiro said during an interview with The MMA Hour that Rousey, who scored four consecutive first-round knockout victories before losing to Holm, was too complacent in her previous fight and Holm was able to capitalize.
"When you have a belt, when you have a championship in your hands, you can't run straight to your opponent as a crazy. You can't do this anymore," Cordeiro said. "So I think the way she ran against Holly was a little bit. She anticipated what she wanted to do. Sometimes you have to hide what you want to do inside the fight."
Cordeiro added that Rousey became too predictable because she did not make enough changes on her fight plan after winning convincingly during her previous four fights. In order to bounce back from the humiliating defeat, the MMA coach said that Rousey should add more weapons in her arsenal.
"I think she has to change a little bit more because everyone started to understand her game," Cordeiro continued. "She can mix a little bit more between punch, kicks, knees, takedown, distance. Things like that is gonna make the difference. She can't start the fight running against the opponent like that."
Cordeiro, who helped UFC superstar Fabricio Werdum and Rafael dos Anjos improve their striking skills, also said that he is open to training Rousey in the future if "Rowdy" decides to ask him for help.
Rousey, who holds a 12-1 record, will not be allowed to fight in the next six months but will likely get a rematch with Holm after the medical suspension. Holm said that she is open to a rematch with Rousey and she is confident that she will beat the former champion again.
"Ten," Holm said, when asked how many times she will win if they will fight 10 times. "Because if I tell myself that there is one that I might not get, then I'll be vulnerable. I also know that I'm beatable, so I'm going to train twice as hard. She's going to come back. She's mad that it's not her title anymore. I've got to be twice as ready as last time."
