‘Men in Black 4’ News: Series Adds Female Agent, May Crossover With ’21 Jump Street’
There are about to be some changes with "Men in Black 4," as the franchise is set to add a female agent lead to the cast of the film. There has also been some talk about a crossover between the series universe and that of the "21 Jump Street" franchise.
According to the BBC, producers Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes -- who are also married to each other -- have opened up to the British media outlet about what is to come for the film. Both worked on the first three films in the franchise.
At the end of the first movie in 1997, it seemed as though actress Linda Fiorentino was primed as a major agent in the series moving forward. But in the first sequel, that possibility never came to fruition, and her character seemed to have been forgotten.
But now, the producers have backtracked and decided to add a female agent after all.
"There will be a prominent woman in black in the fourth [film]," MacDonald told the BBC.
Parkes described the new film as a reinvention of the franchise, but stopped short of calling it a reboot. Adding the female agent to the cast does seem to shake up the playbook, but the move alone does not necessarily indicate a reboot of the franchise.
Producers are also trying to get Will Smith back to reprise his role in the film, cementing the project as a sequel, not a remake.
"We are quite early on in it," Parkes said. "We sort of looked at the first three in retrospect as a bit of a trilogy."
Variety reports that "21 Jump Street" producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are also trying to tie the two franchises together with a crossover event.
"We wanted to take 'Jump Street' in an insane direction," Lord told Variety. "It was a bold approach we were trying at Sony before Tom [Rothman] came, and we weren't sure what his appetite would be for making a movie like that, but he got it right away."
