Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood Shooter Appears in Court
The suspected gunman who killed three people and wounded nine others at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs appeared in court via video link from jail Monday.
CNN reports 57-year-old Robert Lewis Dear stood with his eyes closed and wearing a padded vest before the judge on screen. He gave short responses to the judge's questions. He did not enter a plea or discuss the details of the case.
Dear is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder, with formal charges to be made at a later hearing on Dec. 7. If convicted, he could face a minimum of life in prison, or a maximum penalty of death.
During his appearance, Dear was also accompanied by attorney Daniel King, who previously served in defense of the Colorado movie theater gunman James Holmes.
Dear is suspected of killing a police officer and two civilians in a mass shooting at the clinic on Friday. Nine other people were also injured in the attack.
While investigators have not revealed a motive, signs point to an anti-abortionist agenda. Authorities say Dear mentioned "baby parts" after the shooting and engaged in anti-abortion and anti-government rhetoric.
Rocky Mountains Planned Parenthood president Vicki Cowart said she strongly believed Dear "was motivated by opposition to safe and legal abortion."
Pro-choice and pro-life supporters weighed in on the tragic incident, condemning Dear's actions as terrorism.
"What he did is domestic terrorism, and what he did is absolutely abominable," said Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. "Especially to us in the pro-life movement, because there's nothing about any of us that would condone or in any way look the other way on something like this."
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch will determine whether hate crime or terrorism charges will be considered in the case. Lynch called the incident a "crime against women receiving health care services."
Detectives are currently investigating why Dear chose the Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs. It is believed he acted alone in the attack.
