'Tonight Show' News: Chelsea Handler Angling for 'Boozing' Jimmy Fallon's Job?
Chelsea Handler has made it known she is ready and available to assume "The Tonight Show" reins, should NBC decide to part ways with troubled host Jimmy Fallon.
"Chelsea is rubbing her hands together with glee over Jimmy Fallon's fall from grace," a source told Radar Online. "Remember, Jay Leno was grooming her to take over when he retired and both of them were disappointed when it went to Jimmy."
All the speculation about Fallon's suddenly fragile fate with network executives has been building over his many accidents and his drinking over the past few months.
"Now his drunken antics are starting to cast a shadow over the show, Chelsea's informed NBC she's available to take over any time," a source added of the comedian, whose "Chelsea Lately" show last aired in the summer of last year. "She's convinced it's only a matter of time before the network starts preparing for a back-up plan should Jimmy fail to rein in his boozing."
In late October, Fallon required medical attention at a Cambridge, Massachusetts hospital, after reportedly dropping a bottle of Jägermeister while receiving the Harvard Lampoon's Elmer Award for Excellence in Humor.
"I threw the bottle and then I landed on broken glass," he told "Tonight Show" viewers after returning to the air in bandages. "There [were] pools of blood everywhere."
The incident marked the third injury for Fallon in just four months, raising even more red flags for his NBC bosses about his issues with alcohol.
"It's gone from being a whisper to a chatter," a source said about Fallon's often outrageous behavior.
In June, the funnyman nearly completely severed one of his fingers after tripping on a rug at his luxe Gramercy Park home and catching his wedding ring on a top. The injury resulted in Fallon undergoing a six-hour surgery and being confined to a 10-day stay in the ICU.
Back in April of 2014, Fallon was infamously involved in a brawl at the East Village dive bar Niagara after a taping of the show. By the next evening, he had already rebounded, partying at a Chelsea bar until the early morning and buying shots of vodka for the entire bar.
