'El Señor de los Cielos' Star Rafael Amaya Breaks Silence on Drug Overdose Rumor [Watch]
In an exclusive interview with María Celeste Arrarás, which aired on Dec. 1, actor Rafael Amaya broke his silence about his reported drug overdose.
In the "Al Rojo Vivo" interview, Amaya, who has remained private since news broke that he was rushed to the hospital in the early morning on Oct. 27 for a drug overdose, cleared up all the rumors.
According to TVyNovelas, the actor was rushed to the intensive care unit at a hospital in Mexico at 4 a.m. for tachycardia symptoms and from possible drug intoxication. However, the actor put those claims to rest.
The Mexican star admitted that he was hospitalized for two days, but blamed it on stress and fatigue from his intensive 10-month work schedule.
"Like any other human being, I started to get sick," Amaya said. "I started missing work and Telemundo and I decided that we needed a break and take life back to recharge energy."
The 38-year-old actor also denied that he was in a coma. He backed up his claim by explaining that if he was in a coma, he would have been kept in the hospital far longer, possibly weeks.
The journalist asked Amaya if drugs were involved in his hospitalization and whether he used them to cope with his stressful work schedule, but the actor denied using drugs.
"I had a lot of personal problems in my life. It was like a chain reaction and my body couldn't take it anymore and I had to go to the hospital," he said. "I don't drink, I don't take any type of drug, nor anything. I am very happy with what is happening in my life, with 'El Señor de los Cielos,' with my life, with my family, with my friends and I simply took some time to find myself, to return to my origins."
As for the rumors that he checked himself into rehab, the actor denied those stories too and explained that he had a "spiritual rehabilitation."
"Right now I feel completely renewed, I feel the same energy that I had when I started 'El Señor de los Cielos,' because I really needed to rest," he added.
