‘Supernatural’ Season 11, Episode 8 Recap: An Imaginary Friend and Mock of ‘Twilight’
The expanse of themes present on "Supernatural" really know no bounds. That comes especially true when the Winchester brothers got recruited in Season 11, Episode 8 to help Sam's imaginary friend from childhood.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the episode "Just My Imagination" featured Sam Winchester's imaginary friend Sully, who gives him the shock of a lifetime over an early morning (predawn) coffee and breakfast rendezvous. So much so that he gives his old pal a punch in the face.
Now one has to wonder if that's how you treat and old friend who helped you out in your childhood, but you have to remember that Sam hasn't been a child now for well over a decade.
So after the initial shock and scare, Sam realizes who Sully is and even more shocking would be to see Dean Winchester come out of his slumber and enter the kitchen in a robe -- and actually sees Sully.
"I'm gonna get my gun," Dean says with an uproar of comical overtones although unintentional.
But Sully is able to convince them that as an imaginary fried, he is actually a xana, and his job is to help kids get through their adolescence. So he is both imaginary and a real entity. But he is also being hunted, along with his other imaginary pals. That includes the fatality of a unicorn at a young girl's house.
When the trio arrive at the girls house to investigate, which was preceded by Dean laughably dressing in a cardigan to pose a child counselor to question the girl, they find she is telling the truth about her dead unicorn with its blood on the floor beside it.
This is also where they notice that the blood is sparkling, like glitter. Sully informs them that even in death, their blood can't stop shining. Fans have to wonder if this is a direct shot at the "Twilight" franchise.
So next, a mermaid gets killed, and her southern style boyfriend gets nearly knocked off. But he survives and gives the brothers a lead on who is trying to gut them. In the end, it turns out that Sully had a pair of sisters who he had mentored after Sam and one of them got killed by a car while chasing Sully into the road. The other sister was out for revenge on him, but Dean was able to reason with her.
The episode also included several flashbacks from Sam's youth with Sully and filled in a few gaps from their history.
