Scott Weiland, Lead Singer of Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver, Found Dead at 48
Scott Weiland, rock star and lead vocalist of such bands as Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, was found dead on Friday.
The LA Times reported that the singer's wife, photographer Jamie Weiland, confirmed the news via phone conversation.
"I can't deal with this right now," she said. "It's true."
According to statements on Scott Weiland's social media accounts, the singer passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota. The cause of death is currently unknown.
Wieland gained fame in the 1990s as the front man of the grunge-rock band Stone Temple Pilots. At 48 years old, he had a long and successful career, leaving the Pilots in 2002 to form the multi-platinum and Grammy Award-winning supergroup Velvet Revolver.
The singer was known for his charismatic and flamboyant onstage persona, constantly changing his appearance and sometimes using a megaphone while in concert. Weiland was on tour with his latest band, the Wildabouts, at the time of his death.
The group was scheduled to perform on Thursday evening before the tragedy. According to Medina Entertainment Center, the concert was subsequently canceled and ticket holders were reimbursed.
This is the second death to plague the band in 2015. 34-year-old guitarist Jeremy Brown died of multiple-drug intoxication in March, a day before the release of the band's debut album.
Weiland himself had struggled with drug addiction in the past, entering rehab several times throughout the years.
"The opiate took me to where I'd always dreamed of going," Weiland said to Spin Magazine in 2011. "I can't name the place, but I can say that I was undisturbed and unafraid, a free-floating man in a space without demons and doubts."
It is uncertain if drugs played any role in the singer's death.
Fellow rock stars took to social media to express their shock and condolences.
