Google Glass Release Date, For Sale Price, Explorer Beta News 2014: Trademark And Patent Next Steps For Search Giant
Just because there hasn't been much in the way of news in the public eye concerning the search engine's product leader in the smart glasses industry doesn't mean the technology giant isn't taking efforts to prepare its device to rollout and acceptance in the legal and business realms.
The Washington Post reported that Google has stepped up its game by approaching patent offices with a trademark on the word "Glass." Reports say the patent office has rejected Google's efforts but the company has redoubled its efforts to get the trademark.
"In recent months, Google has been trying to trademark the word 'glass' to refer to its signature smart glasses. The application is broader in scope than for its existing "Google Glass" trademark, however, which might be one reason why the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office isn't buying it. You can't trademark a generic term," Brian Fung reports for the Washington Post.
So Google has responded in characteristic search engine mode, with a 1,928-page letter designed to prove how highly ranked its device has become in the public eye, according to the Wall Street Journal. Around 99 percent of those pages consist of news stories about -- you guessed it -- Google Glass."
Google is taking its time in making the preparations for the release of its new device, making sure that all the bases are covered. There's no rush as widespread consumer sentiment for the device is still lacking. Privacy issues have brought the device under fire especially since a user was attacked in a gentrified bar area in San Francisco after other bar patrons accused her of being part of a movement that has seen inequalities worsened by Silicon Valley wealth.
