This weekend Captain America: The Winter Soldier broke a box office record in the U.S. for the month of October raking in $96.2 million domestically and $202.3 million worldwide.

After about a month of speculation, the success of the film finally prompted Marvel Studios to officially announce Monday that the third installment of the Captain America franchise will in fact be going head to head against the Man of Steel sequel on May 6, 2016.

"Following the record-breaking premiere of Marvel's 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' this past weekend, the First Avenger will jump into his next big screen solo adventure in just a little more than two years," Marvel said in a press release.

According to Variety, the Captain America sequel has grossed more than $302 million as of Monday.

However, 2013's Man of Steel opened domestically to $116.6 million and grossed a total of $668,045,518 worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

Neither Marvel nor Warner Bros. seem to be backing down from the game of box-office chicken, but, according to Variety, one of the two will likely move off the date as the two films will probably cannibalize each other that weekend.

In January, Warner Brose moved up the date of its tentpole film to the May 2016 release so the production team of the tentatively titled Batman vs. Superman film could "fully realize the vision," while Marvel had already booked the date last June.

Marvel would not reveal any details about the third Captain America film but audiences can see Chris Evans reprise his role in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015. He will be rejoined the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes played by Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson.

The film will also include Cobie Smulders and Samuel L. Jackson along with new comers Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and James Spader playing the titular role as the villain.

The Man of Steel sequel will see DC Comics' Holy Trinity grace the silver screen for the first time as Henry Cavill reprises his title role as Superman/Clark Kent and is joined by Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman.

Jesse Eisenberg is set to play the villainous billionaire scientists Lex Luthor as the film welcomes back Amy Adams and Laurence Fishburne.
