Boxing: 5 Opponents Danny Garcia Could Face in His Next Fight
If there were any people doubting Danny Garcia's ability to adjust to the welterweight division, "Swift" put those skeptics in their place. Garcia has looked terrific in his last two fights, extending his record to a perfect 32-0 after defeating Robert Guerrero. Garcia is now ranked No. 7 in the welterweight division, and it's time for him to start facing some of the top opponents to enhance his legacy.
Here are five opponents Garcia should consider facing in his next fight.
1. Keith Thurman
This is a fight everyone wants to see. Keith Thurman missed out on Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, so now he wants a piece of Garcia. Thurman still has to face Shawn Porter next, but this would be a terrific match of undefeated boxers. Thurman recently said he'll beat Garcia if the two ever face off, and he wants to be king of the welterweight division. Thurman has the hardest punch in the division today, but so many boxers are refusing to face "One Time." Garcia would give Thurman a good match because of his quickness and speed, but he would have to avoid Thurman's strong right hook.
4. Canelo Alvarez
What a year it was for Canelo Alvarez. The hard hitting 25-year-old out of Mexico was named "Fighter of the Year" for 2015, and his win over Miguel Cotto was very impressive. Alvarez has a 46-1-1 record with his lone defeat coming against Mayweather back in 2013. Alvarez would have to move back down in weight as we've seen him do in the past, which shouldn't pose much of a problem at all. Alvarez is the No. 1 ranked fighter in the middleweight division, and what better way to show dominance than taking over two weight classes? Alvarez has a slight advantage in reach and height, so Garcia would have to be very quick and elusive in this potential match.
5. Triple G
It's time for Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin to get some notable wins under his belt. "Triple G" is hailed as the next big thing in boxing, but that's far from the truth. Golovkin is now 33 years old without a single notable victory. He's got power, but without a major victory, he won't overtake Alvarez in the middleweight division. Maybe Garcia would give him a chance in the ring. Golovkin does have the size advantage, but again, we just haven't seen him face any big time worthy opponents yet. If Golovkin doesn't take on Alvarez in the near future, he should consider taking on Garcia or another worthy welterweight fighter.
