5 Interesting Facts About Drug Lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman’s Wives, Lovers
Following the recapture of notorious Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman in January, many have been curious about his elusive wives.
The curiosity over El Chapo's wives, lovers and children further intensified when reports circulated last month that his wife Emma Coronel Aispuro was not allowed to visit him at the Altiplano maximum security prison in Toluca, State of Mexico.
El Chapo's second wife Emma Coronol Aispuro, who has two daughters with the Mexican drug lord, was reportedly prohibited to have a conjugal visit with her husband because she was not on the list of authorized personnel to enter. According to teleSur, El Chapo's first wife Alejandrina Maria Salazar Hernandez is the only person who's allowed to visit the Sinaloa Cartel leader.
So, as the women in El Chapo's life fight for their respective visitation rights, here are 5 interesting things we've learned about them.
1. Alejandrina Maria Salazar Hernandez
El Chapo and Hernandez were married in 1977. Daily Entertainment News revealed that the couple have three children: Cesar, Ivan Archivaldo, who was arrested in Guadalajara in 2005, and Jesus Alfredo. Unfortunately, Cesar, who was married to Frida Muñoz Roman, was killed in 2008.
In 2012, Hernandez and her sons were sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department under the Kingpin Act, which bans people in the U.S. from conducting businesses with them and freezes their U.S. assets.
2. Griselda Lopez Perez
Just three years after his first marriage, El Chapo married his second wife Griselda Lopez Perez in 1980. The couple have four children: Edgar, Joaquin, Ovidio and Griselda Guadalupe. In 2014, the Mexican authorities raided her home in Culiacan, Sinaloa.
3. Emma Coronel Aispuro
Aispuro is El Chapo's third wife. In 2007, 18-year-old Aispuro married Guzman, who was 57 at the time. She gave birth to twin girls in a Lancaster, California hospital in 2011, as previously reported.
Aispuro, however, remains to be an enigma to the public. In fact, she maintained her silence and privacy despite the intense scrutiny to her family, Jobs & Hire noted.
4. Estela Pena
Aside from dealing drugs, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is also known for his fondness for women. As a matter of fact, he would do everything to possess the woman he liked even though she rejected him. And one best examples was Pena, a bank employee in Nayarit who met El Chapo when he was about 30 years old.
Unfortunately, she was abducted and raped by El Chapo because she rejected him. Eventually, it was reported that she married the drug lord.
5. Zulema Hernandez
El Chapo and Hernandez's love affair didn't have a happy ending. It actually ended in tragedy. They met while they were both incarcerated at the Puente Grande maximum-security prison outside Guadalajara.
Hernandez became pregnant but suffered a miscarriage during her second trimester after she was beaten by prison guards. Sadly, Hernandez was killed by the Zetas in December 2007, shortly after her release from prison.
Based on the reports, her body was found inside the trunk of a car. She was shot in the head and the letter Z were carved into her breasts, stomach and buttocks.
Aside from the women mentioned above, El Chapo was also reportedly having an affair with Congress member Lucero Guadalupe Sanchez, a 26-year-old politician who was rumored to have recently given birth to his child, Daily Mail reported.
In addition, the notorious drug cartel leader also had a "flirtatious encounter" with actress Kate Del Castillo, who reportedly won Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's trust and heart. As per New York Post, Castillo set up the controversial interview with Sean Penn that led to his recapture on Jan. 8.
