Colombia vs. Costa Rica Copa America 2016 Preview, Prediction, Schedule, Streaming Info As James Rodriguez Continues Strong Tournament Performance
Colombia and Costa Rica will face off in the final group game of the Copa America on Saturday.
Colombia through to second round
Colombia is already through to the second round after taking down Paraguay 2-1 in the second game of the group stage. The shock story for Los Cafeteros was return of James Rodriguez. The captain left the first game against United States with an injury, leaving many to wonder whether he would be back in the tournament.
He was certainly back, putting on a dazzling display against Paraguay that featured a goal, an assist and a number of tremendously creative passes as he pulled the strings to Colombia's attack in the 2-1 victory. This is the James Rodriguez that was so beloved in the 2014 World Cup and at his first season with Real Madrid.
Colombia dominated the first half but seemed to lose steam in the second, the second time in two games that the team has lost its edge in the closing section of a game.
Costa Rica still dreams of advancing after poor performance against U.S.
Meanwhile it is all or nothing for the Ticos as they enter this final match with one point and a desperate need for a victory and some help.
Of course the Costa Ricans' fate might well be decided before this game starts. If the U.S. defeats Paraguay, then all is over for Costa Rica, regardless of the result against Colombia. If Paraguay manages a win, then Costa Rica is still alive with a win.
Of course the team would never have gotten here if not for that disastrous showing against the United States on Tuesday. In a game in which Costa Rica came out flying, the team was completely undressed on the counter giving up some tough goals. Costa Rica's attack was soaring throughout that opening half with the team running in behind the U.S. defense with abandon and creating one chance after another. But just as was the result in their game against Paraguay, Costa Rica simply could not find a way to score.
They have yet to score in the entirety of this tournament.
Player to Watch
There is no doubt that James Rodriguez is the man to keep an eye out for. As he showed against Paraguay, he can seize control of a game on his own and carry his team to victory.
History Favors Colombia
Los Cafeteros have won nine games from Costa Rica, losing three and drawing once. The teams have met in the Copa America on three previous occasions, all three were victories for Colombia. Moreover, Costa Rica has not defeated the South American contingent since 1980.
Prediction
Colombia wraps things up with a solid 1-0 win.
