Team USA Rolls With 4-0 Win Over Costa Rica; USMNT Eyes Gold Cup
After they had beaten one of their rivals, three days later the United States men's national team are still hot as they cruised to another victory against Costa Rica, 4-0 in an international friendly at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
The USMNT Roll Continues
The win was a result of a solid performance coming from the whole team. Players Brenden Aaronson, Reggie Cannon, Daryl Dike, and Gio Reyna were responsible for the amazing performance of USMNT as they scored the 4 goals for Team USA.
The game witnessed the first national team goals of two players. Also, Ethan Finlay recorded the clean sheet as the USMNT beat Costa Rica 4-0.
According to TeamUSA.org, it is the first game where the top Europe-based players played together for Team USA. The overflowing talent was also capitalized by the team as they rotated several starters which gave additional depth and fresh legs. They played forwards Tim Weah and Daryl Dike and also midfielder Yunus Musah.
The USMNT played a 4-3-3 formation which allowed forward Brenden Aaronson put the U.S. early on the board with only eight minutes on the clock. Aaronson made the first goal of the game courtesy of a shot from close range.
Striker Daryl Dike, who was sensational for Barnsley in England's second division last season also made his first international goal. Dike snuck behind Costa Rica's defense and collected a pass on the breakaway, CBS Sports reported.
Also, in the 52-minute mark, the team USA's right back, Reggie Cannon made his presence felt in the field as he also drained his first national team goal. Cannon collected the ball outside the penalty area of Costa Rica then managed to beat a defender to pull off a left-footed shot into the low corner.
Moreover, 18-year-old forward Gio Reyna, who came in as a sub, sealed the game with a penalty conversion at the 77th minute. The sub forward also scored one of the goals during the match against Mexico which created an opening for a Team USA comeback.
Meanwhile, the game was the exact opposite of Sunday night's Concacaf Nations League Final between USMNT and Mexico. The crowd in Denver witnessed the comeback made by Team USA from a two-goal deficit and only led in extra time, The Denver Post reported. Team USA held onto their lead at the penalty when Horvath saved a late penalty shot.
Rolling to the FIFA World Ranking
The 20th world ranked team by FIFA, USMNT improved their record to 6-1 on the season. The only loss for team USA came from a friendly match on May 30 at world ranked No.13 Switzerland. Sebastian Lletget nailed an early goal but the Swiss soccer team put the match at even right away courtesy of Ricardo Rodriguez. Then at the 63rd minute, Steven Zuber drained the game winning goal for Switzerland.
After the win, the USMNT eyes the Concacaf Gold Cup, which kicks off against a yet-to-be determined opponent on July 11 in Kansas City, Kansas. The U.S. Soccer will also be facing Martinique and Canada in group play.
