New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been championing raising the minimum wage, forgiving student loan debt, as well as increasing taxes for the wealthy.

Last year, questions were raised regarding the New York representative's personal wealth, according to a USA Today report.

One Facebook user claimed that Ocasio-Cortez "was broke" when she was first elected as a House representative in 2018.

However, AOC now has a net worth of more than $1 million, according to the Facebook post, which has been shared more than 14,000 times.

However, her latest annual financial disclosure report noted a different tone, stating that she was nowhere close to being a millionaire.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Net Worth

At the time of the filing, her assets included between $1,001 and $15,000 in checking account, between $1,001 and $15,000 in a brokerage account, and between $1,001 and $15,000 invested in a 401K plan according to a Reuters report.

Ocasio-Cortez also openly stated that she is still paying off debt from her student loans, with her owing to the Education Department between $15,001 and $50,000 in federal student loan debt.

She incurred those student loan debt between 2001 and 2007 as an undergraduate student at Boston University.

In a financial disclosure filed in September 2020, she reported assets between $2,003 and $31,000, with the student loan debt still being around the same amount.

The Center for Responsive Politics' OpenSecrets.org ranked Ocasio-Cortez as one of the poorest members of Congress. More than half of Congress members have a net worth of at least $1 million.

Ocasio-Cortez spokeswoman Lauren Hitt noted that the financial disclosure reports are accurate. However, she did not provide any further details.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Salary

Ocasio-Cortez earns $174,000 annually as a member of Congress. However, she was reportedly earning less than $30,000 in the years before she was elected, according to a Distractify report.

AOC reportedly earned $3,588 for her work as a waitress and bartender at the Coffee Shop Taqueria between January 2017 and December 2018.

The place where the New York representative used to work is a now-defunct restaurant in New York's Union Square.

CNBC reported in 2018 that Ocasio-Cortez had less than $7,000 in savings after she was elected as she had stopped working while she was focused on her campaign.

Corbin Trent, director of communications for Ocasio-Cortez, said that AOC's parents also sold the house in 2016 for $355,000 when her father died.

Trent added that Ocasio-Cortez's mother gave her some of the money with the selling of the house.

Despite Ocasio-Cortez's personal wealth not increasing during her time in Congress, her political fundraising has taken off, according to the Federal Elections Commission filings.

In the 2020 election cycle, Ocasio-Cortez's reelection campaign spent $17.3 million after collecting $21.2 million, which left her with about $4.3 million in her campaign funds.

Probe Against AOC

Meanwhile, the New York representative drew criticisms and an investigation after she attended Met Gala, wherein she accepted free tickets for admission.

Conservative group, American Accountability Foundation, filed an ethics complaint stating that they believe AOC broke House rules by accepting an "impermissible gift" of free tickets to attend the annual gala, according to a New York Post report.

The group's founder, Thomas Jones, argued that House rules allow members to accept free tickets to charity events directly from event organizers. However, Met Gala does not count as the guest list is curated by a private company, Conde Nast.

The congresswoman defended her attendance, saying that New York elected officials are regularly invited to Met due to their responsibilities in overseeing the city's cultural institutions.

She then added that her dress was borrowed.

Ocasio-Cortez wore a custom gown with the "Tax the Rich" text on the outfit. It was created by designer Aurora James.
