The U.S. Customs Border Protection's new data on migrant encounters revealed that the apprehensions of Cuban migrants for this fiscal year topped the number of Cubans who boarded the Mariel boatlift in the 1980s.

The latest figure of Cuban migrants encounter at the southwest border was part of the migrant surge that is expected to result in a record two million-plus apprehensions, New York Post reported.

According to the data released by the CBP, Cuban migrants' encounters accounted for 177,848. The said number was encountered by the border agents since October last year. The majority of the apprehensions took place on the southwest border of the U.S., where 175,674 were encountered by the border agents.

Of the said number, 137,435 were reportedly single adults while over 39,000 were made up of various family members who entered the U.S. together.

The latest figure of Cuban migrant encounters by the CBP surpassed the number of Cubans who arrived in the United States in the 1980s Mariel boatlift.

It can be recalled that some 125,000 Cubans boarded the shrimp and fish vessels in the 1980s and journeyed to the U.S. after then-President Fidel Castro claimed that those who do not have revolutionary genes are not needed in the country.

The immigrants during that time included those released from mental hospitals and prisons. The historic event inspired the 1983 remake of the film "Scarface."

Cuban Migrants Stopped at Florida's Southernmost Point

Days before the CBP released the data, more Cuban migrants were stopped at Florida's famed Southernmost point.

According to Local 10, 52 Cuban migrants were stopped by the border agents in the said area.

The Southernmost Point group is one of the 10 migrant landings in Florida keys over the weekend.

U.S. Border Patrol announced that over two days, 187 Cuban migrants were stopped in the Florida Keys over two days.

Border Crossings of Migrants Lower in July

CBP's data also revealed that overall migrant encounters in July this fiscal year were lower than the migrant apprehensions in June. However, the figures for July remain higher than the migrant encounters in the same month, two years ago.

According to the data, the migrant encounters in July amounted to 238,862, lower than June's 247,670.

The number of migrants encountered in July this fiscal year is still higher than what is recorded in the same month of the previous fiscal year, recorded at 233,919.

Currently, the total migrant encounters since October were 2,242,413. The said number is significantly higher than the previous total encounters for the fiscal year 2021, which was at 1,956,519.

"While the encounter numbers remain high, this is a positive trend and the first two-month drop since October 2021," Commissioner Chris Magnus underscored.
