Former U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a new response to the U.S. government through a lawsuit against the U.S. Justice Department as part of his attempts to stop the review of materials seized by the FBI from their Mar-a-Lago raid.

The suit also requires the government to hand out "a more detailed receipt for property," while also requiring the Justice Department to return any item seized that was not included in the search warrant, according to The Guardian report.

Trump's lead attorney, Jim Trusty, including two sources familiar with the matter, noted that the lawsuit argued that the court should have a special master, which is usually a retired lawyer or judge.

They added that the Federal Bureau of Investigation confiscated "privileged materials" during the Mar-a-Lago raid.

The group noted that the Justice Department should not be left to decide what it can use in its probe.

Donald Trump Lawsuit Against Justice Department

The lawsuit noted that the government "has failed to legitimize its historic decision to raid the home of a President who had been fully cooperative," as reported by The Daily Wire.

Trump's attorneys in the lawsuit said that the Mar-a-Lago raid seemed to be driven by "politics than law and order."

The lawsuit also included a short history of Trump's talks with the National Archives over the documents that the agency wanted to retrieve from the former president's residence.

It also noted that the former president's cooperation ended when Justice Department counterintelligence chief Jay Bratt called Trump to inform him that the FBI was searching Mar-a-Lago.

DOJ spokesman Anthony Coley said in a statement that the search warrant at Mar-a-Lago dated August 8 was given a go signal by a federal court on finding probable cause. Coley added that the U.S. government will respond in court.

The Mar-a-Lago raid was prompted when Trump improperly took White House documents when he left office.

The search was reportedly carried out under the Espionage Act, with some of the materials sought involved nuclear weapons.

Mar-a-Lago Raid

Trump claimed that the FBI Mar-a-Lago raid was mistreatment by the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden. The claim was supported by Republicans in Congress.

FBI agents have reportedly recovered more than 300 documents with classified markings from Trump since he left the White House in January 2021.

The specific nature of the sensitive materials that Trump took from the White House is unclear.

The 15 boxes that Trump returned to the archives in January contained documents from the CIA, the National Security Agency, and the FBI.

The New York Times noted that a person familiar with the matter said that it covers different topics of national security interest.

Multiple people who have knowledge of his efforts noted that Trump scanned the boxes himself in late 2021 before turning them over.
