Republican Civil War Brewing? Matt Gaetz Turns on Marjorie Taylor Greene for Supporting Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker

After a disastrous performance during the midterm elections, rifts are forming within the Republican Party. While some are slamming Donald Trump for the election losses, others are going after Mitch McConnel. At the House of Representatives, however, the lines are being drawn between those seeking to support Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker like Marjorie Taylor Greene, and those who do not, like Matt Gaetz.

Greene broke ranks with several pro-Trump Republicans by endorsing McCarthy's speakership. This did not go over too well with her "friend," Matt Gaetz, who slammed his colleague for supporting McCarthy.

"Whatever Kevin has promised Marjorie Taylor Greene, I guarantee you this - at the first opportunity, he will zap her faster than you can say Jewish space laser," said the Florida representative on Mike Lindell's FrankSpeech.com.

Gaetz was referring to Greene's 2008 Facebook post claiming that a wealthy Jewish family used a satellite to cause wildfires in California. According to the Washington Examiner, the Georgia House Republican has had a history of antisemitic and Islamophobic remarks, and her baseless "Jewish Space Laser" claim has been widely mocked.

Marjorie Taylor Greene has become popular in the MAGA movement despite this and has been one of the people in Congress to stick with Gaetz amid his ongoing child sex trafficking investigation, despite claiming that she herself is against child sex traffickers and posted beliefs that coincide with QAnon about an elitist cabal of child sex traffickers in Hollywood and the Democratic party.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Ready for a Republican Civil War

Greene had become a divisive figure in the GOP, and this seems to be the case in what is happening right now. As her "friend," Matt Gaetz, attacked her for supporting McCarthy, she stated that she is not afraid of a Republican civil war.

"We're going to fight it out. I'm telling you - I've always said I'm not afraid of the civil war in the GOP. I lean into it," said Greene as she appeared on Steve Bannon's "War Room" podcast. She defended her position on McCarthy, stating that challenging the current Republican leadership is "very, very risky."

However, The Business Insider noted that she also called for "unity" within the GOP.

"Politics is a blood sport," she said in the podcast. We have to do everything we can to stop our enemy. And the enemy is the Democrat Party," Greene stated.

Kevin McCarthy Being Challenged by Pro-Trump Republican Andy Biggs

In her support of McCarthy, Greene has broken with the other members of the House Freedom Caucus which also includes Gaetz and McCarthy's current challenger, Andrew Biggs.

Many with the House Freedom Caucus are going with Biggs. Gaetz appeared on The Charlie Kirk Show and stated that establishment Republicans are in denial if they believe McCarthy can still become speaker. According to Newsweek, the Florida Representative stated that he "would rather be waterboarded by Liz Cheney, than vote for Kevin McCarthy for Speaker of the House."

For now, it seems that the lines have been drawn as the more pro-Trump MAGA Republicans are going with Biggs while the more moderate establishment Republicans plus Greene are going with McCarthy. With a razor-thin Republican majority at the House, however, the Democrats may be able to pull a surprise in deciding who the House Speaker would be.

This rift between House Republicans is happening as McCain Republicans seemingly helped Democrat Katie Hobbs win the Arizona governor's seat against MAGA Republican Kari Lake, showing further fractures within the party. Lake mirrored Donald Trump's actions as she frequently attacked and belittled late Republican Senator John McCain and pro-McCain Republicans in Arizona while campaigning.
