The chief executive officer of Coral Gables Hospital in Florida was shot and killed by her husband, who then turned the gun on himself to commit suicide.

According to Local 10, Maria Cristina Jimenez, 61, was shot by Antonio Mazzorana, 62, inside their home in the Schenley Park neighborhood near Coral Gables City on Wednesday.

Miami-Dade police said officers responded to the home at around 11:45 a.m. It remained unclear why Mazzorana killed Jimenez as police investigators have not detailed a possible motive.

According to South Florida Hospital News, Jimenez, a grandmother who likes to cook in her leisure time, was appointed CEO of the privately-owned hospital in 2017. She reportedly started as an intern at the hospital and then rose in the ranks from a full-time lab tech before becoming its senior executive.

In a 2019 Instagram post from Coral Gables Hospital, Jimenez was pictured smiling at a luncheon where she was one of the Hispanic Advocate of the Year nominees by Miami-Dade County's Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board.

Florida Hospital CEO Husband Suffers from Mental Health Issues, Authorities Say

According to court documents, there was no history of domestic strife in Antonio Mazzorana's past. However, multiple law enforcement sources told Miami Herald that he might have been struggling with mental health issues as he made remarks that hinted at a possible suicide recently.

Those who knew the couple, who had been together for decades, were reportedly stunned to hear the news. Former Miami-Dade County commissioner and current chair of the Coral Gables Hospital board Rebeca Sosa told the outlet that Maria Cristina Jimenez was a respected leader among her peers.

"Everybody loved her... Anyone who would call Cristina to help someone, she would always be there," Sosa noted.

The bodies of the couple were discovered in the master bedroom when the police arrived. Jimenez's adult daughter called the police after she had not been able to get a hold of her mom after several days.

She went to the couple's home, and after seeing their cars in the driveway, and no one answering the door, she called the police.

Florida Hospital CEO Husband Writes Detailed Note Before Murder-Suicide

Multiple law enforcement sources told Miami Herald they believed the Coral Gables Hospital CEO was shot while she was asleep and that Antonio Mazzorana left a suicide note on the kitchen counter that hinted the motive.

Sources claimed that Mazzorana had made worrying remarks to family members after learning that he would lose his job after next month. Despite not receiving a cancer diagnosis, sources noted that he also had a cancer scare.

State record show Mazzorana is a managing member of a company called AMF Healthcare Partners, LLC. However, it was unclear if this was still his job before the murder-suicide.

His brother, Dr. Ivan Mazzorana, told WFOR that his brother's contract was "coming to an end," but he did not believe he had any financial problems. The couple was reportedly in the process of moving to another newly constructed home.
