Mike Pence Won't Commit to Backing Donald Trump if He Wins Republican Presidential Nomination
Former Vice President Mike Pence is still not saying whether he will run for president in 2024. He also declined to say if he will support former President Donald Trump if he becomes the Republican presidential nominee.
Pence sat down for an interview with CBS News in Michigan on Wednesday. During the interview, Pence did not say if he was gunning for the presidency and did not speak ill of his former boss.
The former vice president was asked if he would endorse Trump, but Pence twice declined to say if he would support Trump if he wins the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidency.
However, he did say that he believes "different times call for different leadership." He also said that he believes voters will choose "wisely again" next year. Pence and Trump's relationship had been strained after the January 6 Capitol insurrection when Trump supporters chanted, "Hang Mike Pence!"
Mike Pence Says He Will Announce His Decision if He Runs for President
So far, only Donald Trump and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley have announced that they will run for president, both seeking the nomination of the Republican Party.
To this, Mike Pence said, "I'm very confident we'll have better choices come 2024," before adding that he was also confident that whoever wins the Republican nomination will also win in the November election next year.
Pence was in Michigan for a speech to young voters. He urged them to "resist the temptation of focusing on personalities or embracing a populism unmoored to conservative principle."
As for his possible 2024 run, Pence recently noted that he will make a decision on whether to run by "this spring." He said in the interview that he and his wife, Karen Pence, are "continuing to give prayerful consideration to entering the race."
According to Fox News, other high-profile Republicans who have yet to announce their candidacies but are expected to run include Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
Mike Pence Slams 'Apologists' for Russia's President Vladimir Putin in Republican Party
Before his Michigan speech, Mike Pence was at the University of Texas at Austin's Clements Center for National Security for another speech. There, the former vice president blasted his own party's "apologists" for Russia's President Vladimir Putin.
While he did not bring up any names, it offered a clear contrast in tone between him and Donald Trump and other MAGA Republicans who have been pushing for the U.S. to stop giving aid to Ukraine, according to CNBC.
"While some in my party have taken a somewhat different view, let me be clear: There can be no room in the leadership of the Republican Party for apologists for Putin," Pence noted. "There can only be room for champions of freedom."
However, he also hit the Biden administration for being too hesitant to provide Ukraine with the necessary supplies to keep up the fight. The former vice president said: "History teaches that he who hesitates is lost,"
