Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg Fires Back at House Republicans for Meddling in an Independent Investigation
The Manhattan District Attorney's Office is pushing back against House Republicans led by Jim Jordan after they asked Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg to testify before Congress. The office stated in a letter that what House Republicans are doing is illegal.
This is all part of the Manhattan DA's investigation into Donald Trump's hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential elections.
Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan claims the Manhattan DA's actions are politically motivated and Congress must investigate. However, the Manhattan DA's general counsel, Leslie Dubeck, pointed out to the former wrestling coach that their request is "an unprecedented inquiry into a pending local prosecution," which "only came after Donald Trump created a false expectation that he would be arrested the next day and his lawyers reportedly urged you to intervene."
She added that there is no basis for a congressional inquiry as the Manhattan DA is a "constitutional officer charged with 'the responsibility to conduct all prosecutions for crimes and offenses cognizable by the court of the county in which he serves.'"
She then points out that Congress does not have the power to prosecute the Manhattan DA for conducting an investigation into a crime and that the investigation by House Republicans is being "conducted solely for the personal aggrandizement of the investigators or to 'punish' those investigated."
The Republican House investigations came after Donald Trump stated without evidence that he would be indicted on Tuesday. However, the day came and went without him getting indicted.
House Republican Meddling Into Manhattan DA Investigation Into Trump Hush Money Payment Illegal
Earlier this week, House Republicans Jim Jordan, Bryan Steil, and James Comer sent a letter to the Manhattan district attorney and requested documents and testimony as they claimed that the federal government is being weaponized against Trump.
However, MSNBC pointed out that "Congress cannot lawfully use its investigative power to engage in law enforcement." If House Republicans move to subpoena the Manhattan DA, it would not only be unlawful but be generally viewed as partisan.
Democrats Lash Out at Republican Probe Into Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg
With Jordan and other Trump-aligned House Republicans investigating the Manhattan DA, several Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee lashed out. This includes House Oversight ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), who described the probe as "an astonishing and unprecedented abuse of power" and could "obstruct a possible criminal indictment."
According to The Hill, Jordan has already sent letters to former prosecutors at the Manhattan DA, including Mark Pomerantz, former New York County Special Assistant District Attorney, and Carey Dunne, former Manhattan Special Assistant District Attorney. Both resigned in February of last year from the Trump investigation headed by Bragg as they disagreed with him over his reluctance to indict Trump.
Jordan requested both former prosecutors to testify "as soon as possible," as well as hand over documents and communications.
