Rupert Murdoch is the son of Sir Keith Murdoch, a former war correspondent, and Dame Elisabeth Murdoch. He is of English, Irish, and Scottish descent.
He inherited his father's company when he died in 1952. According to Wealthy Gorilla, the newspaper "Adelaide News" developed by News Limited, a company owned by Sir Keith, became one of the most-read after Murdoch took ownership.
Since then, he managed to increase his hold over media firms all across Australia, acquiring the Wellington-based newspaper, "The Dominion," on a trip to New Zealand.
He then ventured into the British media and managed the "News of the World" in 1968, followed by "The Sun" the following year. "The Sun" was a national daily newspaper struggling at the time.
The papers were in long broadsheet size and were later shortened to a tabloid format and was done printed in the same press to cut down expenses.
In 1973, he bought "San Antonio Express-News" followed by the "New York Post" three years later. Murdoch also gained control of "20th Century Fox," which was later named "21st Century Fox" in 1986.
Since then, he has done his business activities in the United States. He also renounced his Australian citizenship after becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen for business purposes.
Murdoch is now best known for being the chairman of Fox Corporation, the parent company of Fox Business, Fox News, and Fox Sports.
The media mogul ranks 272nd on the Billionaires' Index of Bloomberg as of April 2023. Celebrity Net Worth estimated Rupert Murdoch's net worth at around $9 billion, while Bloomberg said it's a little over $8 billion.
Murdoch also owns other media companies such as "The Wall Street Journal," "The Daily Telegraph," "Sky News Australia," and "HarperCollins."
Rupert Murdoch Legal Battle Against Dominion Voting Systems
The Guardian reported that lawyers for Dominion Voting Systems wanted to put Rupert Murdoch on the stand to testify before it reached a $787.5 million settlement with Fox for broadcasting false claims about the firm's voting equipment after the 2020 presidential election.
Aside from Murdoch, his son, Lachlan, and other Fox News hosts such as Tucker Carlson, Maria Bartiromo, and Sean Hannity are also expected to take the witness stand.
Dominion uncovered and published a stunning trove of internal communications, showing that Murdoch and the hosts were aware of the false claims but broadcasted them anyway.
One of Dominion's attorneys, Stephen Shackelford, noted after the settlement that "money is accountability, and today we got that from Fox."
