Legendary TV host and former Cincinnati Mayor Jerry Springer has passed away, as revealed by his family last Thursday. He reportedly died peacefully in his home in Chicago.

As for his cause of death, The Daily Mail reported that he died after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Springer's family stated that his health took a turn for the worse before he died. They added, "'As he always said, take care of yourself, and each other."

The former Cincinnati mayor did not publicly talk about his battle with cancer, but he did hint at it during a 2022 interview. He stated that after Judge Jerry was canceled, he admitted that he wanted to retire while he was "still healthy." He added, "'I don't have to make a living. I want to enjoy life."

Jene Galvin, the spokesperson for the late host's family, stated, "Jerry's ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word," before adding, "He's irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart, and humor will live on."

Jerry Springer is best known for his trash TV-style program, "The Jerry Springer Show," which has since become America's guilty pleasure. The show was one of the most controversial shows in TV history, as guests were often encouraged to fight, brawl, and do demeaning things to themselves.

Jerry Springer in Politics

While he is best known for trash TV, Jerry Springer was actually a politician who previously resigned in disgrace while serving in the city council of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Before he became mayor, Springer resigned from his city council position in April 1974 because of a sex scandal. According to People magazine, the then-councilman paid for sex at a brothel using checks. He was outed through a blind item from the Enquirer that stated that a "well-known Cincinnati political family" was the subject of an investigation in Ohio and Kentucky.

After this came out, Springer resigned from his position but still went on to win an election to reclaim his city council seat before running for mayor. Throughout all of this, he owned up to his sex scandal.

As mayor, he became an adviser to Robert Kennedy and even tried running for governor of Ohio.
