Phoenix police officials did not release the suspect's name or any other information, including a motive, but they announced his arrest.
Arizona Woman Lauren Heike Murdered in Phoenix Trail
The 29-year-old Arizona woman was "viciously" attacked from behind during a solo hike on a north Phoenix trail and was "fatally injured" on Friday, police said.
According to PEOPLE, Lauren Heike sustained "trauma to her body." However, her exact cause of death has not been disclosed.
Police said a passerby reportedly found her dead in an area not easily visible the day after they believed she was killed.
Before the suspect was apprehended, police described him as between 5'8" and 6′0″ tall man with a dark complexion, last seen wearing dark clothing and a backpack.
Heike was an esthetician who had recently moved to Phoenix from Washington. She was believed to hike alone on the Reach 11 trail not far from her home when the assailant murdered her between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Heike's father, Jeff Heike, earlier said that her daughter was his "little girl," whom he would miss "terribly," adding that he hoped authorities "can find whoever did this to her."

Phoenix police said the location was described as a "desert area" near 6500 East Libby Street. It was close to where she was residing.
Daily Mail reported that Lauren Heike's apartment was located in an upscale area of North Phoenix, where houses are marketed for up to $1.3 million.
Heike's mother said her daughter got up and talked to her friends during her last day. It was Heike's day off, and she got her coffee and went walking.
Police also did not release information on how the Arizona woman was killed or if a weapon was used, as they did not want to harm the ongoing investigation.
Loved ones had described Heike as a "beautiful person" inside and out. They said she loved exercising and being outdoors. Heike's mother described her daughter as a pretty, kind woman who was sweet to everyone she met.
