Marjorie Taylor Greene Threatens To Oust House Speaker Mike Johnson While Pushing Racist Rhetoric Vs. Migrants
It is happening again as the ever-fractured House Republicans are once again turning on each other, with Georgia MAGA Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene targeting House Speaker Mike Johnson over him having a deal with Democrats on the topic of immigration to prevent a government shutdown.
The more extreme right members of the Republican Party, such as Greene, prefer deeper budget cuts and would rather have a government shutdown than have a deal with Democrats, resulting in hundreds of thousands of federal workers going without pay until the Democrats cave to their demands.
While her talking points about spending on aid to Ukraine is part of the usual Republican rhetoric, Greene raised even more eyebrows when she used language that echoed the white supremacist-linked Great Replacement Theory regarding migrants arriving at the US-Mexico border.
"That Senate border deal, or so-called border deal, it's really an amnesty deal where Democrats are going to bring in millions and millions of illegals and turn them into Democrat voters, that's their plan, to replace Americans with millions and millions of illegal aliens," she said in an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo. "They want to do this in exchange for $60 billion more for Ukraine."
"I told Speaker Johnson if he made that deal in exchange for $60 billion for Ukraine, I would vacate the chair," she said on Fox. "And I still stand by those words."
Salon noted that Marjorie Taylor Greene is stoking Republican fears that the migrants, who mostly come from Latin American countries, would replace them in the US. This is called the Great Replacement Theory, often pushed by white supremacists to make white people afraid that a black or brown person will be replacing them as the dominant race in the US, using events such as the migrant surge to rally people to vote for far-right Republican candidates like Donald Trump and Greene herself.
The theory "claims that liberal elites are deliberately driving high levels of immigration in order to 'replace' white Americans - or even to kill them off - [which] was once confined to the far-right white nationalist fringe [and] at this point ... has been almost completely normalized within the Republican Party."
Marjorie Taylor Greene Admits To Threatening House Speaker Mike Johnson With Ouster
The controversial Georgia Republican also appeared on Steve Bannon's show for an interview and admitted to threatening House Speaker Mike Johnson's motion to vacate over the border deal he struck with Democrats.
"In my meeting with him yesterday and many other members of Congress, I let Speaker Johnson know that in no way, shape and form will I support any type of [continuing resolution]," she told Bannon. "I told him yesterday in his office that I would vacate the chair, that that is absolutely unacceptable," adding, "And we actually have the power of the first; we're the ones that are in control, and we need to control the negotiation. I reiterated those same points this morning, so the ball is in his court."
Moderate Democrats May Try and Save Mike Johnson if Marjorie Taylor Greene's Plan Happens
While the far-right continues to float an ouster move against the current House Speaker, moderate Democrats may try a rare move to save Mike Johnson from his own party members to keep the government working.
"Yes, we would back him," a moderate House Democrat told NBC News, with another saying, "I probably would [support Johnson]. We can't do another three-week standstill. As it is, we've got nothing done in the 118th Congress."
This is a reference to the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy by far-right Republicans over doing deals with the Biden administration over the budget.
"Look, he's not my favorite person in the world, but on the other hand it's a terrible and tough job in this Congress," the Democrat added.
