Immigration Reform Update: Alaska Senate Candidate Joe Miller Says US 'Can't Allow' Amnesty
Based on polling data, Joe Miller is in third place for the Alaska Republican Senate nomination, but it hasn't deterred the candidate from changing his stance on immigration.
Miller's campaign previously distributed fliers depicting undocumented immigrants as Hispanic gang members, which brought criticism even from his Republican challengers. Miller defended the fliers stating, "It's the truth," during a debate with former Alaska Attorney General Dan Sullivan and Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell.
During the debate, Miller also reasserted his stance on amnesty for immigrants. In an interview with Breitbart News, Miller reaffirmed his position.
"We can't allow amnesty. It's an inducement. We have to rid ourselves of other inducements as well. The taxpayer-funded inducements that cause people to want to come here," Miller said. "If you take away the benefits of illegal immigration, the end result is that you'll have less of it, but if you reinforce it with rewards, then it's a pretty simple concept, you're going to have more illegals here. The approach that lacks the most compassion is the one that encourages more of this catastrophe."
Miller's campaign outlined seven steps to address the immigration crisis, despite living thousands of miles from the southern U.S. border.
"The crisis of illegal immigration we're facing is not only unnecessary, it is being instigated by the Obama Administration," said Miller on his website. "It's time we take some simple steps to ensure the integrity of our borders and the security of the American people.
Miller's steps include eliminating all foreign aid to countries "encouraging" immigrants to cross the border, a border fence and billing the home nations of undocumented immigrants for policing, housing and transportation. Miller also proposes ending the citizenship lottery by the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) and ending "endless" benefits including health care, education, and social services for the undocumented.
"With these seven, simple, common sense steps we could fix this problem once and for all. The crisis that the President and this Congress have essentially created is unconscionable. Promising a safe haven with many of the same benefits as citizens is unacceptable. It's time for Congress not only to act with respect to fixing the problem, but also to hold Barrack Obama accountable."
According to Public Policy Polling (PPP), Sullivan leads with 35 percent to Treadwell's 29 percent. Miller is behind with 20 percent.
Miller has received the endorsements of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin and the Anchorage Tea Party.
Miller previously ran for and won the state's GOP senate nomination in 2010 but lost to Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-AK, when she reentered the race as a write-in candidate.
