The Walking Dead has risen to become the most successful show in cable television history. It has smashed ratings records left and right and even beat out the all time King Sunday Night Football for the top spot. Now the series has so many fans, and is raking in so much cash, that AMC sees fit to give it a spin-off.

AMC has done the same thing with "Better Call Saul" a spin-off from Breaking Bad about the crooked lawyer who helps Walt and Jesse build and maintain their meth empire. That show had already been renewed for a second season before the first had even premiered! So AMC is definitely banking on these spin-off series.

Here's everything we know so far about the new Walking Dead Spin-Off.

The new series will be set in Los Angeles though no word yet on where the show will actually be shot. Los Angeles would presumable be a logistical nightmare to shoot in. The current series is based and shot in Atlanta, but the day to day beat in Georgia is much more forgiving with on location shots.

The new series, currently codenamed "Cobalt" is expected to be a prequel of the current show and will supposedly have a character cameo from the current run. Details point towards one of the current characters appearing in the first episode of the prequel series. Though that character has not been named, here are a few that have.

(Character descriptions straight from AMC)

Sean Cabrera: A Latino male in his early 40s. Sean is a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life.

Cody Cabrera: Sean's whip-smart and rebellious teenage son. Known as the angriest kid in town.

Nancy Tompkins: A thirty-something single mom with two kids. Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there's an edge to her.

Nick Tompkins: Nancy's screwed-up teenage son. He's too old to stay home, too scared to flee.

Ashley Tompkins: Nancy's mostly levelheaded teenage daughter. Her ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother's failures. She loves her mom, but it's time to get out of Dodge.

Andrea Chapman: A somewhat wilted flower child, forty-something. Andrea retreated to the outskirts of the city to recover after a horrible marriage.

Now this show should be good as The Walking Dead comic creator Robert Kirkman will be lead show runner on the production. While his comic has not actually explored how the apocalypse came about or much of what happened right before it, this will be an opportunity for him to flesh that out.

Currently the prequel is only in its pilot stage, and technically does not have a guarantee of getting picked up, but all signs point to yes.
