The New York Giants made their first big move this offseason as multiple reports confirmed they have reached a deal with free agent running back Shane Vereen on Tuesday.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed that Vereen have committed to sign with the Giants when he becomes eligible at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Vereen reportedly informed the New England Patriots about the offer from the Giants and gave his former team the opportunity to match the contract, but the Pats declined.

Terms of the deal between Vereen and the Giants are still unknown at this point, but Paul Schwartz of New York Post reported that the 26-year-old will be the highest-paid running back on the Giants roster. It means that Vereen will get a contract bigger than the four-year, $14 million deal Rashad Jennings signed with the team last year.

Schwartz added that the Giants had Vereen on their radar since the offseason started because they are determined to add a running back that would complement Jennings and Andre Williams, who were called by Giants general manager as their "big bangers" on the roster.

Reese was reportedly looking for a running back who could add more speed and pass-catching ability to their backfield, and Vereen fits the billing based on his numbers for the Patriots last season.

Vereen, a second-round pick during the 2011 NFL Draft, was one of the main reasons why the Patriots won Super Bowl XLIX earlier this year, tallying 11 receptions in their win against the Seattle Seahawks.

In 16 regular-season games with the Patriots last season, the four-year veteran tallied 52 catches for 447 yards and three receiving touchdowns. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Vereen is comparable to the combined production of five Giants RBs last season – 62 receptions for 469 with no receiving TD.

The Giants, who finished third in the National Football Conference East standings last season with their measly 6-10 record, also expressed interest in Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu before agreeing to a deal with Vereen. The Patriots will likely go after Helu to take the spot left by Vereen on their roster.
