Brian Hoyer is reportedly leaning towards signing with the Houston Texans soon, but the New York Jets are planning to make a strong push to convince the free-agent quarterback to reconsider his decision, ESPN reported.

Hoyer, who completed 55.3 percent of his passes for 3,326 yards with 12 touchdowns in 14 games last season, have the Texans on top of his list, but the Jets could turn the table around depending on what role they are planning to give the 28-year-old quarterback.

If Hoyer decides to sign with Houston, he will have to compete for the starting spot with Ryan Mallett, who signed a two-year, $7 million deal with the Texans on Monday. Mallet played in just three games last season and threw 41-of-5 for 400 yards with two touchdowns last season, but is the strongest candidate to start in the season opener.

Mallett, who took the starting spot from veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick late last year, led the Texans to a 23-7 victory over the Hoyer-led Cleveland Browns squad last season. But despite being outplayed by Mallett, Texans coach Bill O'Brien had some kind words for Hoyer, who played under him for three years in New England.

"He's studied a lot of film. He's a very smart player. He makes the right decisions for his team. He's an accurate passer," O'Brien said of Hoyer. "I remember back a few years ago when I was coaching him, I used to hear that people questioned his arm strength. I think the guy has got a strong arm."

If he ends up signing a deal with the Jets, most analysts are convinced that he will have a better chance of starting the 2015 NFL season as a starter. He will have to battle it out with veteran Geno Smith, who had 13 interceptions in 14 games with the Jets last season.

Previous reports indicated that Smith will likely start again for the Jets last season, but things could change if the team acquires a veteran quarterback to challenge the 24-year-old.
