The April 2 slaying of an off-duty San Jose paramedic has taken a shocking turn, as five boys have been arrested on suspicion of murder, robbery, and carjacking during the incident.

34 year old Quinn Boyer was stopped at a stop sign at around noon on April 2 in Oakland Hills when a car pulled up beside him and he was shot in the head at nearly point blank range. Boyer, a paramedic since 2008, never regained consciousness and died 2 days later in the hospital.

The attack, which happened at the corner of Kellar Avenue and Hansom Drive appears to be a random act of violence and authorities do not believe that it was gang-related. The suspects, all boys, are two 14-year-olds, two 15-year-olds, and a 16-year-old.

"I'm deeply concerned about an unacceptable and disturbing trend where robberies and other crimes are being committed by young people 13 to 17," said police Chief Howard Jordan. "Young people are finding it very simple to point a gun and shoot someone."

Boyer was memorialized Tuesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Oakland with a service that drew hundreds of people, including Oakland mayor Jean Quan. Boyer was a newlywed with a solid reputation at his job. The cities of Oakland, Sunnyvale, and Milpitas have recognized April 16 as Quinn Boyer Day.

Authorities are not releasing much information as the investigation is ongoing, but would say that the first suspect was arrested on Monday and they were eventually able to get enough information out of him to arrest the other four boys over the next day. The boys have already made "some admissions" as to their involvement.

"I call on parents, the schools and the community to change the cycle," Jordan said, continuing: "Some young people believe it is very easy to shoot someone and that was the same situation in this case."

Jordan may have been alluding to a Georgia shooting that took place less than two weeks before this April 2 incident. In that case, two high school boys approached a mother who was taking her baby for a walk and demanded that she give them money. When she said she didn't have any, they shot her in the leg and her baby in the head, killing the infant instantly.
