UFC News & Notes: Georges St-Pierre Unsure of Return, Speaks Up About Long Hiatus [Video]
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is unsure if he will return to the Octagon after taking a long break from the sport.
St-Pierre, who has not fought since successfully defending his welterweight title against Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in November 2013, reportedly decided to go on a hiatus to take a stand on UFC's drug-testing program.
In a recent interview with GNP1.de, St-Pierre said that there are several reasons why he decided to stay away from fighting inside the Octagon, and insisted that he is not yet thinking of making a comeback soon.
"There is different reasons of why I took a break," St-Pierre said via Bloody Elbow. "What I can say is, I'm not sure, I don't know right now if I wanna come back or not. I'm not sure when, if I do. So it's still the same answer as before."
Previous reports also indicated that St-Pierre stepped out of the sport because he wants to have a family. The 34-year-old superstar confirmed that he is looking to have his own family, but he said it is not the main reason why he decided to take a break.
St-Pierre said that he felt he needed to take a break after dominating for several years because of the tremendous pressure of being a champion.
"I've been champion for like nine years, eight years. And it's a very stressful life," St-Pierre said. "You have a lot of criticism, a lot of pressure and critics, and everything put together, it hit you a lot. You don't wanna hear the critics sometimes, but it's still there. I'm a sensitive guy, and it hit you, hit you, and you're never good enough and stuff."
St-Pierre, who defeated his last 12 opponents before deciding to relinquish his title, also added that he was not having fun anymore during his last several fights and could have actually called it quits before facing Hendricks.
"I didn't have fun at the end, I did it because I had to, not because I wanted to," St-Pierre added. "I should have actually stopped maybe one fight before, or two fights before, but I couldn't. It was always constantly another guy challenging me. Carrying all this weight on my shoulders, I felt like I needed to do it, instead of wanting to do it."
While pondering his decision on whether to return to the Octagon or not, St-Pierre said that he will enjoy hews social life for now, but will continue training for fun to keep himself in shape if ever he decides to fight again.
