NFL: Did San Diego Chargers Make a Big Mistake With Philip Rivers' Contract?
As many NFL fans already know, the San Diego Chargers and Philip Rivers recently agreed to a new contract extension. This new contract guarantees Rivers $65 million, the most of any quarterback in the NFL according to ESPN. Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers previously had the highest with $64 million in guaranteed money.
The contract also has a no trade clause in it, which is very rare for NFL players.
What's done is done, and Rivers will more than likely finish his career in San Diego. However, fans have been split on this decision since the signing. Some fans believe it was a great move, while others think the Chargers overpaid big time.
A case could definitely be made that the Chargers made a mistake. Rivers is now 33 years old, and the Chargers aren't getting any better. In fact, they're getting worse. The Chargers have missed the playoffs four of the last five seasons, and they haven't won the AFC West since 2009. Rivers and the Chargers offense just haven't been able to compete against the best teams since LaDainian Tomlinson left. Last season Rivers led the NFL in interceptions with 18, not exactly contingent with a $65 million quarterback.
It's not all Rivers' fault. The Chargers have a lot of work to do. Last season they ranked 30th in rushing yards, and their defense still has huge holes. It may have been wise for the Chargers to just rebuild instead of trying to save a sinking ship. That philosophy draws comparisons to the Dallas Cowboys in 1989. Herschel Walker was an outstanding running back, but there was no reason for the Cowboys to keep on the roster considering no success came with him.
For the Chargers to invest $65 million in guaranteed money in a quarterback on a team that hasn't won a playoff game since 2008 could have a very negative impact on their salary cap. With a no trade clause in place, Rivers is there to stay, meaning the Chargers will eat all $65 million of that salary cap hit. It will be tough for the Chargers to improve their secondary and running game considering they just invested $65 million in one player.
On the other side, some fans think the Chargers made a good investment.
Rivers has passed for over 4,000 yards in six of the last seven seasons. He has even surpassed Dan Fouts for the majority of franchise records including passing touchdowns and passing yards. Rivers hasn't won a playoff game since 2008, but he has led the Chargers to four playoff wins in his career.
Although Rivers did lead the league in interceptions last year, he was by far their best player. A case could have been made he was in the MVP conversation after the first six weeks of play. The Chargers were in playoff contention, but went on to lose four of their last five games to finish the season. Imagine the Chargers without Rivers?
