Boxing News 2015: Gennady Golovkin vs the Cotto-Canelo Bout Winner May Not Happen
The much-anticipated fight between Gennady Golovkin and the Cotto-Canelo bout winner may not happen.
World Boxing Association, International Boxing Organization and International Boxing Federation middleweight king Golovkin may have to move forward without facing either Miguel Cotto or Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, noted Boxing News 24.
"Triple G" is the World Boxing Council interim champion and mandatory challenger to whoever wins the Nov. 21 showdown between Cotto and "Canelo" at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. However, its seems that the two fighters are not looking into having a showdown with him, noted the site.
Issue on Catch-Weights
Golovkin's chance to meet with the victor decreased with his stand on catchweights. The Kazakh warrior firmly said that he will fight the WBC champ at 160 pounds, Boxing Scene noted.
"Canelo" said that he will not be going up to 160 pounds to fight "GGG" in the near future. The Mexican boxer stated that it should be Golovkin that should step down at 155 pounds for their fight to happen, in case he captures the title from the 35-year-old Puerto Rican fighter, per a separate Boxing Scene article.
Cotto, on the other hand, may also not collide with "GGG" basing on how he negotiated with other boxers. He recently defended his last title against Daniel Geale at a catchweight of 157 pounds, per ESPN. In November, he will be colliding with "Canelo" at 155 pounds, Boxing Junkie informed. It is more likely that it will be his condition to face Golovkin. If "GGG" does not agree, then they will most probably not proceed with the fight.
More proposed fights for the Cotto-Canelo winner?
Aside from the two boxers not facing "GGG" at 160 pounds, it seems there are other options for them to take.
Alvarez could face World Boxing Organization champ Timothy Bradley after he successfully defends his title against "Bam Bam" Brandon Rios on Nov. 7, unless Bradley gets a nod from eight-division champ Manny Pacquiao for his final fight.
Top Rank CEO Bob Arum shared this idea on ESPN.
"If Bradley wins and is not fighting Pacquiao, I'd like to make him with Canelo. That's a good fight. If Canelo beats Cotto, I've talked to (Alvarez promoter) Oscar (De La Hoya) about the winner of Bradley-Rios fighting Canelo, and he loves it," Bradley's promoter said.
The Cotto-Canelo winner is also targeted for a bout against Rios, if he wins against Bradley, according to Robert Garcia, "Bam Bam's" trainer.
"This is such an important fight. Win this, and we can fight (Terence) Crawford or the winner of Canelo versus Cotto," Garcia said.
Will Cotto and Canelo vacate the WBC crown and just aim for the WBO title instead of sharing a boxing ring with Golovkin?
