Barcelona vs Bayern Munich: Which Soccer Club Has Edge in 2015-16 Champions League?
As we all know, the UEFA Champions League is the biggest soccer tournament in all of Europe because it combines all of the best teams from the most notable leagues. As always, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are competing, and they are both heavy favorites to make it to the finals.
Barcelona and Bayern Munich are each the defending champions in their respective leagues. They have each won the UEFA Champions League tournament five times, and both squads are currently in first place in group play of this Champions League. The similarities are striking, but at the end of the day, there can only be one winner.
So which team has looked more impressive as we head into the final group stage games?
Barcelona hasn't lost a single game despite the fact that Lionel Messi has been injured. The only stain on Barcelona's schedule was a 1-1 draw against Roma, which was played in Italy. Barcelona got sweet revenge against their Italian rivals in their last game by dominating Roma, 6-1 at the Camp Nou. The South American trio of Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar is back and better than ever. Barcelona has a commanding eight point lead in Group E over Roma, and they will play Bayer Leverkusen in their next game.
As impressive as Bayern Munich has looked, let's not forget it was Barcelona who defeated and eliminated them last year. Barcelona won on a 5-2 aggregate score on the two games with Neymar scoring three of those goals. Barcelona won the exclusive treble consisting of the Copa del Rey, Champions League and La Liga title. If Barcelona goes on to win this Champions League, they would be the first club since A.C. Milan in 1989-1990 to win back-to-back titles.
But even the almighty Barcelona can be dethroned. Bayern Munich is on top of the Bundesliga standings, and they have looked as balanced as anyone. Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski have created a dynamic offense that hasn't lost a single league game this season. Bayern Munich's best ingredient is time of possession. They know how to control the ball better than any other team in the world thanks to a powerful middle field led by Arturo Vidal. Bayern Munich also has arguably the best goalkeeper in the world in Manuel Neuer.
Bayern Munich leads Group F with 12 points over second place Olympiacos. Bayern Munich already swept Olympiacos, so this group has already been clinched. Muller and Lewandowski are tied for second in goals scored with seven so far in this tournament while Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid is in first place. Bayern Munich clearly has all the pieces to win it all as they have been to the finals two of the last four years.
Real Madrid will always be in the mix as well, but they have suffered a lot of injures lately. Juventus, who made it to the finals last year, currently leads Group D. Juventus was also responsible for eliminating Real Madrid from last year's Champions League.
