Putin Divorce: Kremlin Confirms President's Divorce; Russian Media Doesn't Report It
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his wife, Lyudmila Putina, have finalized their divorce after three decades of marriage, according to the leader's official biography on the Kremlin website.
Putin has been under fire as of late for his relentless interference with neighboring Ukraine. Leaders in American and European countries have slapped sanctions on Russia after the nation annexed the Crimea region, which previously belonged to Ukraine. Even in recent days, Putin has continued to face criticism as thousands of Russian troops remain at the Ukrainian-Russian border.
Although news of Putin's divorce is circulating around the world in a hurry, it is not getting so much coverage right at home in Russia. BBC.com's Stephen Ennis has an inside look at the way the government seems to have possibly intentionally kept it out of the news.
"The Kremlin appears to have managed the official confirmation of Mr Putin's divorce to limit its impact on the Russian public at large," Ennis wrote. "State-owned news agency Itar-Tass broke the story late on Tuesday but thereafter it was largely ignored by the mainstream media. By this evening, none of the main TV channels had been observed to report it."
Putin has been in various positions of power over the years. After serving as President from 2000 to 2008, he became the Prime Minister from 1999 to 2000 and then held the same position from 2008-2012. The only reason why he did not end up running for President again in 2008 was because the Russian constitution bans Presidents from holding the position for three consecutive terms.
